What That AC Noise Means: Banging, Buzzing & Screeching Explained
Your air conditioner has a language. After 20+ years working on systems from Apollo Beach to Sun City Center, I can tell you that most AC breakdowns announce themselves days or weeks in advance — with a noise. The homeowners who call us at the first strange sound usually get away with a small repair. The ones who turn up the TV and hope it goes away? Those are the folks we meet on a Saturday in August when it's 94 degrees and the whole system has quit.
Here in South Hillsborough County, our units work harder than almost anywhere in the country. They run nearly year-round, they sit outside in salt-heavy air near the bay, and right now — peak hurricane season — they're getting pelted with wind-blown debris on top of everything else. So when your AC starts making a new sound, it's worth two minutes to figure out what it's telling you.
Banging, Clanking, or Rattling: Something Is Loose (or Broken)
A banging or clanking sound from the outdoor unit usually means a component has come loose and is hitting something it shouldn't. Common culprits:
- A loose or bent fan blade striking the cage or a twig lodged inside. This time of year, after every afternoon thunderstorm, we pull palm fronds, oak twigs, and even lizard-chewed debris out of condenser units all over Apollo Beach and Ruskin.
- Loose mounting bolts on the compressor or fan motor. Vibration works fasteners loose over years of runtime — and our units run a lot.
- A failing compressor. If the banging is coming from deep inside the unit and gets worse, internal compressor parts may be breaking down. That's a stop-and-call-now situation, because a compressor that grenades itself often takes the whole system with it.
Quick check you can do safely: kill power at the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit, look through the top grille, and see if anything is visibly resting on or near the fan. Never reach in. If you don't see obvious debris, the problem is internal — leave it off and call.
Screeching or Squealing: Motor or Belt Trouble
A high-pitched screech is almost always metal-on-metal or a motor bearing on its way out. In older air handlers it can be a worn belt, but most systems in newer Apollo Beach and Riverview homes are direct-drive — so around here, screeching usually means the blower motor or condenser fan motor bearings are failing.
Here's the local wrinkle: salt air accelerates this. If you live east of US-41 near the water, moisture and salt work into motor bearings faster than they would inland in Brandon or Valrico. We replace noticeably more fan motors within a mile of the bay than we do anywhere else in our service area.
A screeching motor will still run — for a while. But when the bearing seizes, the motor burns out, and if it's the condenser fan, the compressor can overheat right along with it. One noisy motor can turn into a two-part repair if you wait. If you hear a sustained squeal every time the system kicks on, get it looked at within a few days, not a few weeks.
Buzzing: Electrical Problems You Shouldn't Ignore
Buzzing is the sound I take most seriously, because it's usually electrical. Common sources:
- A failing contactor — the relay that sends power to your compressor. When the contacts pit and burn, they buzz. This is one of the most common repairs we do, and it's inexpensive if caught early.
- A weak capacitor. Florida heat is brutal on capacitors — the constant high-load runtime in July and August cooks them. A buzzing unit that hums but won't start the fan is a classic bad-capacitor symptom.
- Loose wiring or arcing. Buzzing plus a burning smell means shut the system off at the breaker immediately.
Electrical issues are also where hurricane season matters. Power flickers and brownouts during storms — which we've already had plenty of this summer — stress contactors and capacitors hard. If your AC started buzzing right after a storm knocked the power around, that's not a coincidence.
Hissing or Gurgling: Refrigerant on the Move (Somewhere It Shouldn't Be)
A hissing sound near the indoor unit or along the copper lines often means refrigerant escaping through a leak. A gurgling or bubbling sound can mean the refrigerant charge is already low and there's air moving through the lines.
Two things to know about refrigerant leaks in our area:
- They don't fix themselves, and "topping off" every summer isn't a fix — it's an expensive subscription to a problem. Modern refrigerants like R-454B and R-32 aren't cheap, and a leaking coil will keep drinking them.
- Coastal corrosion causes a lot of them. Formicary corrosion in evaporator coils and salt pitting on outdoor coils are everyday finds for us in Apollo Beach, Gibsonton, and along the coastal side of Ruskin.
One more hissing source worth mentioning: a clogged condensate drain can make gurgling sounds too, and in our humidity that drain line is working overtime right now. Either way, the sound is your cue to have it diagnosed before you're looking at a frozen coil or water damage on the ceiling.
Clicking, Rapid Cycling, and the Sounds of a Tired Thermostat
A single click when the system starts and stops is normal — that's the contactor doing its job. What's not normal:
- Constant clicking from the thermostat or control board, which points to a failing relay or a control voltage problem.
- Click-click-click with no startup — the system is trying to start and failing, often a capacitor or hard-start issue.
- Short bursts of running, then off, then on again (short cycling). This wears out components faster than almost anything else and can come from electrical faults, low refrigerant, or an oversized system.
If your system is clicking and short cycling during an August heat wave, every one of those restarts is a hammer blow to the compressor. Don't ride it out.
When to Call — and What It Costs to Find Out
Here's my honest rule of thumb after two decades in this business: any new noise that persists for more than a day deserves a diagnosis. The gap between "small repair" and "system replacement" is usually just time. A $20 contactor ignored becomes a burned motor. A screeching bearing ignored becomes a dead compressor. A hissing coil ignored becomes a full refrigerant recharge plus the repair you needed anyway.
