Why Is My AC Frozen? Iced-Up Coils in Apollo Beach FL

It's one of the strangest calls we get in the middle of a Florida summer: "My air conditioner is blowing warm, and there's ice on it." Sounds impossible when it's 94 degrees outside — but a frozen AC is one of the most common problems we see here in Apollo Beach, Riverview, and Sun City Center. How Can an AC Freeze Up in Florida Heat?

Here's the short version: your indoor coil (the evaporator) gets cold to pull heat and humidity out of your air. Under normal conditions it stays right around 40°F. But when something disrupts the airflow or the refrigerant balance, that coil drops below freezing. The moisture in our humid Gulf-coast air condenses on it and freezes solid — turning your efficient AC into a block of ice.

Once ice forms, it insulates the coil so it can't absorb heat anymore. That's why the air coming from your vents feels warm even though the system is running hard. The colder the coil gets, the more ice forms, and the worse it gets. It's a spiral that won't fix itself while the unit keeps running.

What to Do Right Now if Your AC Is Frozen

If you see ice, don't keep running the system — you can burn out the compressor, which is the single most expensive part in your whole AC. Take these steps in order:

  1. Turn the cooling OFF at the thermostat. Then switch the fan to "ON." Running just the fan blows warm indoor air across the coil and melts the ice much faster than letting it sit.
  2. Check and change your air filter. If it's gray and packed with dust, that's very likely your answer. Swap in a fresh one.
  3. Open all your vents and clear anything blocking them. Give the system room to breathe.
  4. Wait for a full thaw — usually 1 to 3 hours. Don't chip at the ice with anything sharp; you can puncture the coil and cause a refrigerant leak.
  5. Watch for water. A big melt can overflow the drain pan. Keep towels handy and check that your condensate drain isn't clogged.

Once it's fully thawed, turn cooling back on. If it cools normally and stays ice-free, a dirty filter was probably the whole story. If it freezes again within a day, you've got a deeper issue — refrigerant, coil, or blower — that needs a technician.
